Amazon Kindling

Rob from the always-entertaining-but-hard-to-describe science/prank/DIY/investigative journalism site Cockeyed.com had the brilliant idea of making an Amazon Kindling– a wireless wooden e-book (which uses no electricity….), and we were pleased to help out. You can read his writeup here. You can buy your own on eBay too.

Asus EEE Seashell MacBook Air Killer

Asus’ MacBook Air-style Eee PC 1008HA - aka Seashell - goes on sale in the UK next week, the company said today.

This 10in “user-centric blend of timeless design and effortless mobility” - and there were we thinking it was just a netbook - weighs just 1.1kg and is no more than an inch thick. Like the Air, it’s well curvy and packs its ports behind fold-out flaps.

Here is some video of the Asus EEE Seashell.

Amazon Announces the Kindle DX (UBER)

May 6th, 2009 by George Burnett

Amazon Kindle DX

Similar features to the regular Kindle but it boasts a 9.7″ diagonal e-ink screen. This new screen is capable of the same 16 shades of gray for clear text and sharp images as well. The form factor is larger in all dimensions as well; 0.02″ thicker, 2.4″ taller and 1.9″ wider. Due to the size increase Amazon has been able to beef-up the storage too as the DX can hold 3,500 books (2,000 more). Other neat enhancements to the Kindle DX is the ability to rotate the dislpay and a native PDF reader that is builtin vs. the internal conversion tool the standard Kindle uses. All in all the DX is a cool piece of tech but I really don’t think there was a market for a DX at this point in time. The Kindle DX is selling for $489 and can only be bought at Amazon.com.

New Tech Defined: DNSSEC

May 4th, 2009 by George Burnett

What is DNSSEC?

DNSSEC (short for DNS Security Extensions) adds security to the Domain Name System. DNSSEC was designed to protect the Internet from certain attacks, such as DNS cache poisoning (discovered by Dan Kaminsky). It is a set of extensions to DNS, which provide: a) origin authentication of DNS data, b) data integrity, and c) authenticated denial of existence.

These mechanisms require changes to the DNS protocol. DNSSEC adds four new resource record types: Resource Record Signature (RRSIG), DNS Public Key (DNSKEY), Delegation Signer (DS), and Next Secure (NSEC). These new RRs are described in detail in RFC 4034.

DNSSEC services protect against most of the threats to the Domain Name System. There are several distinct classes of threats to the Domain Name System, most of which are DNS-related instances of more general problems, but a few of which are specific to peculiarities of the DNS protocol.

Note that DNSSEC does not provide confidentiality of data. Also, DNSSEC does not protect against DDoS Attacks.

For more details introductory information on DNSSEC go here.

Advantageous - Price Match Your MP3 From iTunes

April 7th, 2009 by George Burnett

Advantageous for Mac screenshot

This helpful little script will locate any song or album you’re currently viewing in the iTunes Music Store and display it for purchase on Amazon. Since iTunes launched their variable pricing on most of their catalog, saving $$$ will be a bit more difficult than before (since Amazon was alway cheaper and DRM free). Advantageous is a simple script that take a bit of the leg work out of the price matching process by locating and displaying your current audio conquest. This script is available for both Mac OS X and more recent Windows OS’.
