Pretty Polished Pearl

September 7th, 2006 by George Burnett

What do you get when you combine the Motorola SLVR + BlackBerry 7130 and add in 3 years of researching, testing & honing? The newly announced (today) BlackBerry Pearl (8100)!
BlackBerry Pearl
Quick Specs:

This new BlackBerry device is packed with features including all of the standard BB features in their most recent devics such as:

  • Phone
  • Email, SMS & IM
  • Browser
  • Organizer

But it also includes “BlackBerry WOW Factors” such as:

  • 1.3 Mega Pixel Camera w/flash
  • Media Player
  • BlackBerry Maps
  • Expandable Memory Slot
  • Trackball Navigation (apposed to the track-wheel)
  • Voice Activated Dialing

Quick Notes:

Beneath its sleek and stylish exterior, which measures just 4.2″ x 1.97″ x .57″ and weighs only 3.1 ounces, the BlackBerry Pearl is a quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE-enabled mobile application powerhouse delivering the fast performance of the latest generation BlackBerry handset platform. The built-in 64MB flash memory is now expandable with a MicroSD card, giving users plenty more storage for music, pictures, videos, and data files.

Images appear incredibly vivid and crisp on the BlackBerry Pearl’s large, ultra-bright, high resolution (240×260) display. Built-in light sensing technology automatically adjusts the screen and keypad brightness for optimum viewing of emails and attachments, pictures, web pages, business applications and games in indoor, outdoor and dark environments.

As you can see the Pearl includes a lot of the “wanted” features that current BB users have been looking for in a BB device. The BlackBerry Fanboys are really going to be happy with this release.

Availability:

The BlackBerry Pearl will be available from T-Mobile USA in the United States beginning September 12. It will also be available in October from Rogers Wireless in Canada and a variety of carriers in Europe. Availability in Asia-Pacific and Latin America is expected later this year.

As a 8700c BlackBerry user I am pretty excited by the Pearl’s release… now the only questions are when? how much and Cingular release date?

Be sure to check out the BlackBerry 101 for the Pearl too.

One of the thing I like about the new BB Perl is the front facing trackball, I have yet to use one as they are only available on the O2 network in Ireland so far and I’m on Vodafone.

I did however get a chance to use the Nokia E61 which is one to watch out for.
