Straight off, iPhone salivators, here’s The Time to go with The Date in your calendar (. . . I’m guessing iCal):
6:00pm
At WWDC last week, Steve Jobs announced in his keynote that the iPhone will go on sale on 29-June at 6:00pm, “local time.” Time will tell if the line around your local Apple Store (or AT&T Store) will match the length of an average line for a Star Wars screening. (Episode I? Probably. Episode IV? Doubtful.)
Beyond this tiny datum, Jobs answered another lingering iPhone question at WWDC, namely, Whither iPhone SDK? Well, they’re calling it Safari. Until a proper SDK is released—which might never happen, but probably will—would-be iPhone developers are hereby invited to write web applications. For a 320×480 160ppi screen. Ostensibly, there will be hooks in Safari that will allow developers to program iPhone-specific features like Google Maps links into their web applications, but details are still scarce.
There are a couple of iPhone “applications” out there already, but they seem to be simply… small-screen web apps with interface elements that look like the iPhone’s. Some of these “beta” applications attempt to drive the point home by framing the interface in a mocked-up iPhone, which is an element that will hopefully be removed before they are actually released. They include:
To the detractors of the “Safari is the SDK” message, consider this: A mobile web browser with full Javascript and CSS capability is a novel concept, and one worth celebrating for the push it will give to increasingly sophisticated web applications.
