Open Cloud Manifesto Leaked

March 27th, 2009 by George Burnett

Cloud Computing ?A secret document called the “Open Cloud Manifesto” has been leaked onto the Internet as of recently. The net community at-large had become aware of this document when someone (or some group) asked some people at Microsoft to sign it. Microsoft wasn’t very happy about this since they are trying to lauch their newly released (closed source) cloud service called Azure.

A lot of questions are still surrounding this document and the events that took place with Microsoft. Who wrote the Manifesto? Who asked Microsoft to sign it? What are the exact terms in the Manifesto to which Microsoft is objecting? And who (if anyone) would be bound to the terms of the Manifesto?

Partial answers can be found with a fellow by the name of Reuven Cohen who has stepped forward in a Google Group post with a bit more information. Reuven is quoted saying;

Over the last few weeks I have been working closely with several of the
largest technology companies and organizations helping to co-author the Open
Cloud Manifesto. Our goal is to draft a document that clearly states we
(including dozens of supporting companies) believe that like the Internet,
the cloud itself should be open.

One thing we do know for sure is that the Open Cloud Manifesto is still in its infantsy and has a ways until it would be considered complete. If you find this subject interesting or you think you have valuable input on the subject you’re encouraged to join the Open Cloud Google Group.
