Schmap It With Your iPod touch/ iPhone

May 13th, 2008 by George Burnett

The developers over at Schmap.com have release a neat little web-app that lets you browse for a variety of locations and events through most major cities from your iPod Touch or iPhone.

Its easy, just browse to http://www.schmap.com from either of those Apple devices over Wi-Fi or EDGE. Select the city you wish to peruse and then the sites you wish to see (cafes, hotels, tours, etc…). Schmap will then display a listing of each of the sites it has for your search. The nifty part comes when you rotate your device into landscape browsing as the listing you’ve selected will be displayed in a static Google Map image along side the original listing. For more info you should head on over to schmap.com from a regular computer/browser.

OSX Hacked Onto OQO

April 29th, 2008 by Sean Trafton

Though tfr has only gotten Leopard to work at a fixed 800×480 resolution and hasn’t tried to get WWAN networking working, Mac OS X running at all on the VIA-based hardware is interesting nonetheless. Another curiosity is that OQO was founded by ex-Apple employees who left the company when their idea for an OQO-like device running OS X was supposedly shot down.

The Espresso Book Machine is the Anti-Kindle

April 27th, 2008 by George Burnett

A company called On Demand Books (appr. name) has developed a machine they call the Espresso Book Machine (EBM) which is a fully integrated patented book making machine which can automatically print, bind and trim on demand at point of sale perfect bound library quality books with 4-color covers (indistinguishable from the factory made original) in minutes for a penny a page.

One of the co-founders of Books On Demand, Jason Epstein, recently wrote a compelling argument in MIT’s Technology Review magazine title “What’s Wrong with the Kindle”. In this article, while describing the concept of the Kindle he states;

“The designers of handheld readers aim to approximate as nearly as possible the characteristics of a physical book -including, I am told, pages that actually fell like paper; but why bother when the physical book already embodies these characteristics to perfection?”

Jason goes on to say that the most rational form of digital transmission is not an electronic reader but quite the reverse, an actual book made from a digital file … instantly.

According to their website they currently have the EBM installed in less than 10 locations, most of which are on college campuses.

Mac OS X Leopard Quick Look Add-ons

April 22nd, 2008 by George Burnett

Apple’s newest Mac OS X Leopard release has tons of new and awesome features. One of the most noticeable and functional features is the Quick Look enhancement. Quick Look lets you preview supported files without having to open the associated program. You will find that Quick Look is extremely useful and addicting once you start using it. Currently Quick Look supports a handful of file types like:

  • Images
  • Text files
  • PDF files
  • Movies
  • Keynote presentations
  • Mail attachments
  • Microsoft Office formats (.doc, .ppt, .xls, etc…)

Noticeably there are quite a few missing file types here… so the YISTA crew has put together a small download called QuickLookinz that allows you to add those to Leopards Quick Look. Added file types are the following:

  • Illustrator (.AI, .EPS)
  • Archive files (.ZIP, .TAR, .BZIP, .ACE, .CAB, etc…)
  • File Folders (extended)

These are all made by different individuals on the Internet and all original licenses have been kept in tact. Please let us know by dropping a comment below if you find this download helpful.
